What Meher Mount Means to Me

Robert Turnage

Meher Mount is important to me because of its long association with Avatar Meher Baba. That Meher Baba blessed Meher Mount with His visit in 1956 has profound significance for me.

What makes Meher Mount extra special are its natural qualities and beautiful setting – something increasingly rare and precious in Southern California.

Reincarnation According to Avatar Meher Baba

Meher Mount

“Immortality of the individualised soul is rendered possible by the fact that the individualised soul is not the same as the physical body.

“The individualised soul continues to exist with all its sanskaras [impressions] in the inner worlds through the medium of its mental and subtle bodies, even after it has discarded its gross body at the time of death.

The Early Ashram at Manzil-e-Meem

Margaret Magnus

Manzil-e-Meem was the Bombay residence Meher Baba used for His work with His close disciples (mandali) for about 10 months from 1992 to 1923.  Generally translated, the term Manzil-e-Meem means "the House of the Master."

Taking inspiration from Meher Baba's gutta at Manzil-e-Meem, Fred Stankus has for years hosted a "Gutta Breakfast" in different venues.

"Life is so beautiful. It is meant to be happy." - Avatar Meher Baba

Margaret Magnus

Meher Baba continually stressed a cheerful attitude and asked His followers not to be "garlic faced."

There is an interview with Meher Baba on happiness in Not We But One: Meher Baba on Life, Living and Love, a collection of stories and messages from the life of Meher Baba by Bill Le Page.

A Promise Fulfilled - Almost 50 Years Later

Ursula Reinhart

In the mid-1960s, my then husband Mik Hamilton and I traveled around the world in an attempt to meet Meher Baba. On March 7, 1966, we met Him in Meherazad, India.

When we returned to the US, we lived in Santa Barbara, California – about a 50-minute drive from Meher Mount. We continued to correspond with Meher Baba. One topic of our letters was helping Agnes Baron at Meher Mount.

Boundary Dispute Is Settled

Margaret Magnus

When Avatar Meher Baba visited Meher Mount in 1956, He asked about Meher Mount's boundaries. He was particularly inquisitive about the southern boundary corner post.

Meher Mount discovered that the property of the neighbors to the south, Larry and Maj Hagman, encroached on Meher Mount's land with footings for their solar panels, a couple of other small structures and a road. The fence line was actually on Meher Mount’s property.

Interestingly, that boundary line starts from the very corner Meher Baba inquired about.

Guests Are Engulfed in the Clouds

Margaret Magnus

The weather report for Sunday, April 14, 2013, said “mostly sunny, 69 degrees, 10% chance of rain.”

Invitations to the event that day - the "Don’t Worry, Be Happy” Ojai WordFest After Party - had invited everyone to come see the 360-degree views from atop the 2,500-foot level of Sulphur Mountain Road.

However, when volunteers arrived to set up for the event, Sulphur Mountain and Meher Mount were enshrouded in the clouds.

The Workshop - The Need for a Master Plan

Margaret Magnus

The need for the fireproof garage/workshop sparked a series of discussions which led directly to the development of a long-range master plan for Meher Mount.

Meher Mount had earlier begun long-range planning discussions by holding two community meetings – February 7, 2004 and May 22, 2004 –to brainstorm ideas that would help guide the master plan.
