"The place isn’t yours. It belongs to Meher Baba. Make up your mind to that."

Meher Mount

Your Friday photo is in honor of Meher Mount co-founder and lifetime caretaker Agnes Baron (1907-1994) and the opening reception tonight at the Ojai Valley Museum of the exhibit “Women of the Ojai Valley: 100 Years of Ojai History” which includes Agnes Baron...

In this photo Agnes is sitting in front of her screened in porch of the main house where she lived before the 1985 New Life (Ferndale) Fire destroyed all the buildings at Meher Mount.

Over the years, Agnes faced numerous instances of other people trying to get control of Meher Mount. The following is one story in the early years when she fought to hold onto the 172-acre property for Avatar Meher Baba.

The place isn’t yours. It belongs to Meher Baba. Make up your mind to that.
— Agnes Baron, Co-Founder & Lifetime Caretaker

Agnes’ journey to Meher Mount started just after she returned from Europe as the U.S. was nearing entry into World War II in 1941. Agnes, who was 34 years old at the time, was disillusioned and disheartened at what she had seen.

She came to California and found inspiration and meaning studying Vedanta. But she left the Vedanta group in Hollywood after two years, accusing the swami of being a hypocrite and fallen yogi.[1]

She went to live at another Vedanta Center in La Crescenta, CA, but was asked to leave because her typing late into the night disturbed the other residents. They suggested she go next door to another retreat.

That’s where she met Jean Adriel and Alexander Markey, disciples of Meher Baba. They had established the New Life Center in La Crescenta in late 1944 and dedicated it to Meher Baba.

Later, sometime in 1946, Jean told Agnes that Meher Baba had written from India to find a place at least two hours away from a big city.[2]

One afternoon, the group was going to go to the Ojai Valley, and they invited Agnes along for the ride.

Agnes was the one who spotted a curious stand of trees atop Sulphur Mountain and insisted they investigate. When Agnes jumped over the fence to explore the property that would become Meher Mount, she had crossed the threshold to her destiny in work and service for the rest of her life.[3]

Jean and Alexander closed escrow on the property on July 31, 1946. Agnes, still uncertain about Meher Baba, moved in with the group. She wanted to be the “outdoor man.”

“So, I learned how to prune fruit trees, how to run a tractor, I did all that stuff that I didn't know before,” Agnes said. “And after one year, [Jean] decided to go to India. And then she made everybody else leave. There were about 10 people, and [she] made them all leave and wanted me to stay. I said, ‘I’m not interested in your Baba, why should I stay?’”[4]

“[Jean said] ‘I want you to stay until I find out what Baba wants.’”[5]

“So finally, it ended up with her going away, [and] my staying on. I was [here] alone, keeping the place.”[6]

Sometime later, according to Agnes, Jean turned up with a businessman whose last name was Bosberg.

“Anyway, to make a long story short, he pulled a very dirty trick,” Agnes recalled. “He pretended to be interested in Baba and he insisted on having the property in his name.”[7]

[As an aside, it’s not clear from research to date that Bosberg had his name on the property, but Agnes thought he did.]

“And when that was done,” Agnes continued, “he told somebody else, ‘Ha ha, I played a good trick. I’m not interested in Baba, I just said that to get the property. I’m going to have a big hotel here and I’m going to have all the psychics.’”[8]

“Can you imagine anything worse than that?” Agnes asked.

“And when I heard that, for the first time I wrote to Meher Baba. I knew that somebody was lying and cheating. So, I wrote Him the whole story because, on principle, I hate anybody who tries to cheat somebody else.”

“Without thinking I just wrote down, ‘and Baba if you want Meher Mount, I’ll keep it for you through hellfire and damnation.’ I signed it and sent it off.”[9]

“Now, why did I do that?” She asked herself when she was telling the story in Mandali Hall in Meherazad, India, in 1982.

“It’s only in hindsight that I see that from the very beginning a little string that Baba had me like a little fish pulling me along like this. So anyway, I sent it off and so He had been doing that all this time to keep me to my promise of hellfire and damnation.”[10]

Meher Baba wrote back what she called a very sweet letter saying, He appreciated and loved Agnes very much and that she, by all means, should keep Meher Mount for Him.

“I didn’t say anything to the man [Bosberg],” Agnes continued, “but I made up my mind that the place is not his. He lied to get it in his name, mind you.

“And I didn’t know what to do, but I only knew that the man was not going to get possession of it. Finally, it came to a climax, and he wrote a letter and he said, ‘I have been sending a lot of people interested in putting money into the place with me up to Meher Mount.’ I don’t know if he called it Meher Mount or not. And he said, ‘They always come away and say no, they are not interested. Now what are you doing?! What are you and that Meher Baba doing to these people?!’

“And he said Baba was a black magician and I was under His powers and all that nonsense. So, after a few letters, I got very angry, and I wrote him a letter. I said, ‘Look. Stop writing this nonsense. The place isn’t yours. It belongs to Meher Baba. Make up your mind to that.’ And I said, ‘From now on I’m not going to write you anymore. I’m not going to answer any of your stupid letters. And I said, ‘Enough.’”[11]

“So, anyway, I received no more letters,” she said.

From the beginning, Agnes Baron had 100% responsibility for Meher Mount. And she carried that responsibility all alone until her death in 1994. The property dedicated to Avatar Meher Baba is now owned and governed by the non-profit organization, Meher Mount Corporation.

"Baba, here is the spirit of Meher Mount."

Meher Mount

Your Friday photo in honor of National Pet Day today…

Agnes Baron, Meher Mount’s co-founder and lifetime caretaker, always had pets to keep her company as she was alone on top of the mountain.

In this photo taken by Lud Dimpfl in 1956 — just months after Avatar Meher Baba’s visit — she is with her dog Kali. (Photo courtesy of Joan Dimpfl Harland.)

Baba, here is the spirit of Meher Mount.
— Agnes Baron

When Agnes drove Meher Baba to Meher Mount on August 2, 1956, they were greeted by her dog Kali.

“Baba, here is the spirit of Meher Mount,” Agnes said, indicating her beautiful and intelligent, short-haired, golden, part-collie, part-greyhound dog named Kali, who eased up next to Meher Baba.

During the day, as they walked around Meher Mount, Kali followed them everywhere, always close to Meher Baba.

At the end of the day just as the sun was setting over the scenic hills of Ojai, Meher Baba got into Agnes’ station wagon to leave. He patted Kali’s head saying the dog would incarnate as a human being for having met Him.

Agnes often shared this story with those who visited Meher Mount. She said that Kali was a very special and intelligent dog.

Before learning about Meher Baba and becoming one of His followers, Agnes Baron lived the life of a Vedanta nun for several years. During that time, she probably learned about Kali, or Kalika, the Hindu goddess.

"Baba never went wrong in choosing His Watchdog!"

Meher Mount

Your photo Friday is honor of Meher Mount co-founder Agnes Baron’s birthday today…

“In looking for a photo of Agnes (1907-1994) to share on her birthday, I was particularly drawn this one of Agnes (left) with Mansari (Mani Behram Desai) in India in 1982,” noted Sam Ervin, board president.

“It’s such a loving and sweet photo of them together.”

Agnes only visited Meherabad and Meherazad – places of pilgrimage in India for followers of Meher Baba – once for three weeks, but she and Mansari immediately became life-long friends.

“Many years after Agnes Baron went to India, I was visiting with Meherabad resident Jal Dastur and others,” remembered Sam. “The subject of Agnes and her friendship with Mansari came up.

“Jal said, ‘I feel that Meher Baba took the fiery part of Himself from His early days and split it into two parts: Mansari Desai in the East, and Agnes Baron in the West.’”

Baba never went wrong in choosing His Watch dog! Yes, Sweety, He has chosen you for that! Bravo!

Ideal fit to do His duty for good. With the best in ‘One’, your Eastern partner dog.
— Mansari Desai, Letter to Agnes Baron*

Both women had strong personalities and tender hearts and were profoundly devoted to Meher Baba.

Each lived alone on a hilltop watching over a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Avatar Meher Baba. Agnes was the caretaker for Meher Mount in Ojai, California. Mansari lived in Upper Meherabad, India, caring for Meher Baba’s Tomb Shrine.

They were both known as “watchdogs” — one in the East (Mansari) and one in the West (Agnes).

Agnes and Mansari corresponded until Agnes’ passing in 1994. They wrote one another teasing, loving letters, bonding over their love of dogs.

To Agnes, Mansari wrote:

“My ever dear, respected Agniji, Jai Baba.

Hope you are fine and happily doing the duty given by our One! Your photo is on my table along with Baba’s. You dear are unforgettable one.

Thank Baba that I had a chance - unexpected - to see you for 3 weeks, 11 years ago!

I think of you and talk of you to the people [here] – His lovers. Jai Baba!**

Wish you the best in Baba to burn bright as Agni! Thank you Baba, to meet your Spark at least once.”***

"An authentic love and extraordinary commitment..."

Stephanie Ervin

Your Friday photo is in honor of International Women’s Day…

On this day Meher Mount is reminded of the indelible and enduring impressions of Agnes Baron (1907-1994), co-founder of Meher Mount whom Meher Baba affectionately called His watchdog.

This photo of Agnes was taken in the late 1970s by Sam Ervin. She is sitting outside on a summer day in front of the main house where she lived.

~ Stephanie Ervin recalls the respect from those who knew her…

My life overlapped with Agnes for 11 years. My father Sam Ervin had a close relationship with her starting in 1968. While I only have a few clear memories of her, I’ve realized that she has influenced me for life.

Only recently, I have seen how important it has been for me to hear men speak about Agnes with tremendous respect and care. Hearing this has been powerful.

Agnes looked after and tended Meher Mount in her own way. Her ferocity, passion, and devotion was matched only by her environment. When I look at Agnes Baron I see a woman who lived life on her own terms. She valued her independence. She never married, never had children, and did whatever she could to help others.

She didn't compromise her morals or her values and persisted until she found a spiritual teacher — Avatar Meher Baba — whom she felt embodied her beliefs and values.

In honor of International Women’s Day, these are some reflections about Agnes by some of the men who knew her, cared for her, and were inspired by her.

~Ken Ceder: “Agnes could tune in to what the person needed.”

In my experience Agnes was tough, even fighting the local oil companies that were abusing land rights, but she had a softer side. When certain people visited, under circumstances that I didn’t realize, she would be gentle and treat them with kid gloves. Agnes could tune in to what that person needed.

I met Agnes in the late 1980s and was not into caregiving. I find it curious that I ended up caring for her with my brother Len until her passing in 1994.

One of my tasks was doing her laundry. One day she said, I have something important to tell you. I thought, “Oh, she’s going to tell me how special I am for taking care of her,” and I awaited her praise.

She said, “Now, don’t let this go to your head, but you do good laundry.”

My ego went to my knees. She not only had a great sense of humor, but she also knew exactly how to chip away at my big ego or as she used to say, “Chop me down!”

You see I didn’t iron clothes. But when I took them out of the laundry and while the clothes were still warm, I hand pressed them and very carefully folded them. That’s why she liked the way I did the laundry.

~Larry Pesta: “One of my most important spiritual teachers… “

The ‘New Life’ Fire in Ojai happened on Monday, October 14, 1985. I attempted to call Agnes Baron that day, but to no avail. Then, I heard the news from friends that Meher Mount had indeed been destroyed.

The following weekend, I flew down to Los Angeles and drove to Ojai to visit Agnes personally and make sure that she was well. Agnes appeared quite composed and peaceful.

She was interested in showing me the burned out remains of Meher Mount, and we drove up the mountain together. We walked around the property for quite awhile which was still smoldering from the fire. Mostly everything was destroyed.

Walking out near the tree under which Meher Baba once sat on His famous visit, I felt really sorry for Agnes and her situation. I said, “This must be horrible for you.”

She looked at me and said, “The important question for you to ask is this. Tell me. Could you handle this? I've been burned out. The important question is will you allow Meher Baba to burn you out as well if necessary?”

I immediately realized that I was not just visiting someone who had lost everything in a fire. I was standing face-to-face with one of my most important spiritual teachers in this lifetime. She was not talking about physical fire but spiritual fire.

~Ray Johnston: “An authentic love and extraordinary commitment…”

In the photo above I am struck most by Agnes' legs. Battered and torn from the tough living and working environment at Meher Mount all those years.

I still have the scars on my legs from years of cuts, bites, scrapes and stickers received as a caretaker at Meher Mount. I was always in awe of how she did it for so many years!

I know how the privilege of a deep relationship with Meher Mount often comes with the demand for blood, sweat and tears.

Agnes Baron possessed an authentic love and extraordinary commitment to the essence and place that is Meher Mount.
