Meher Mount's Master Plan Guides Fire Recovery

When Meher Mount’s fiscal year started on July 1, 2017, the year-long goal was to update the Master Plan. There was a community meeting in July along with an online survey to solicit comments for the next version of the plan.

Then, on December 4, 2017, the Thomas Fire struck Meher Mount. It seemed initially that master planning would be set aside to focus on fire recovery. On the contrary.

The discussions from the previous months, which supplemented the existing Master Plan, served as guiding principles for fire recovery and renewal.

It was as if the recent planning process had been particularly designed to guide recovery projects. Specific actions outlined in the plan became part of the recovery and renewal effort.

Baba's Tree Ashes - A Keepsake and a Connection

When the 2017 Thomas Fire occurred, I couldn’t stay away. I was very, very bereft. I was just heartbroken. It just felt like a piece of me had been pulled out of my heart. I was desperate to get to Baba’s Tree. It was like having a loved one caught in a fire.

By the time Sulphur Mountain Road opened, Baba’s Tree was still smoldering. I noticed that the heart of Baba’s Tree – the huge trunk that was already hollowed out a good bit from the previous fire – that this fire hollowed it out even more.

And these ashes were sitting right there in the heart. And when I saw them, I thought, “Wow, we need to save these ashes. Maybe we can gather the ashes and send them out to people.”
