Baba's Tree Challenge Match
Avatar Meher Baba sat under a Coast Live Oak known as Baba's Tree. He signaled that no one else should sit down. His eyes shone, and He said He was Happy. - Meher Baba at Meher Mount, 1956
“There’s nothing normal about this tree”
A year ago, a volunteer team guided by ISA® Certified Arborist Michael Inaba initiated multiple efforts to save Baba’s Tree which had been badly burned and damaged in the December 2017 Thomas Fire.
Pipe was laid underground to bring water to this Coast Life Oak during the hot, dry summer months. More than 12-cubic yards of mulch was spread to keep in moisture and provide nutrients. Metal props were placed under weak limbs to keep them from breaking off and further damaging the tree. Limbs with new growth were hand-wrapped in floating row cover to shield the new buds from the harsh sun since there was no protective, natural tree canopy. The new leaves were sprayed to help with pest control and sunburn protection. And Baba’s Tree was put in seclusion – an intensive care unit (ICU) of sorts – to help it recover from the trauma.
When Inaba first saw the damage to Baba’s Tree in January 2018, he said, “Nobody tries to save a tree this badly burned.” Almost 12 months later, amazed at the extent of the new growth on Baba’s Tree, he started to say, “Normally…” He paused and said, “There’s nothing normal about this tree.”
All the efforts on the ground, the prayers from around the world, and the Avatar’s Divine plan combined to make Baba’s Tree an even greater symbol of Meher Baba’s Presence.
SAVING THE WOOD FROM THE FALLEN PARTS OF BABA’S TREE
All of these efforts were made possible because of loving donations in support of Baba’s Tree. These donations also made it possible to harvest, mill and save the fallen wood from Baba’s Tree. Some of the wood from Baba’s Tree has already been made into outdoor benches. Small branches recently provided 1,400 dhuni sticks that were shared with 35 Meher Baba groups. And all the remaining wood is stored for ongoing use.
Phase II of Baba’s Tree Care & Preservation
Now, it’s time for Phase II of Baba’s Tree Care and Preservation. Care for Baba’s Tree regeneration includes: splinting carefully selected branches to support their growth and help create a new canopy; continued, judicial watering; chipping remaining twigs and small branches for a new layer of mulch; monitoring and preventive action for invasive tree pests; and monitoring and action on sun protection.
Phase II for Baba’s Tree wood requires creating longer-term storage solution for harvested and milled wood – as well as using the wood at Meher Mount, ranging from frames for photographs and paintings of Meher Baba to creating outdoor benches for visitors.
A $6,500 Challenge MATCH
To spur others to support Phase II of Baba’s Tree, a group of donors pooled their resources to create a special $6,500 Challenge Match. So, when you make a donation, your contribution is effectively doubled. Every donation is matched dollar-for-dollar up to $6,500 when made before April 15, 2019.
